Delaney
Delaney is what we call a Pocket Pittie, she's full grown at 1 year old and weighs in at 32lbs! She's full of life and love, and even though she had a very rough start to her life wandering the streets of Philadelphia with a lot of injuries, she's just the happiest little pittie you'll ever meet. We can't wait to see all the things she's going to learn!
Delaney is sponsored by Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance, CPAA.

So Delaney over the past few weeks has become extremely lazy to the point she lays down inside, she lays down outside, all she does is lay around like she is 100 years old. So I had to hold a treat in my hand so she smells it, and I began running laps in the yard just so she would get some kind of exercise. She was so exhausted by the time I was done. She came inside and laid on the cold floor to cool off, and then she got in bed and was snoring in a couple minutes, LOL. I think she hated me for doing that to her, but she is still amazing!

Delaney is still doing very well. She still makes me laugh almost every day with her personality. She is so routine-oriented that if something is out of place, or she doesn't think it should be there, she will let it be known. Like a gardener in between the blocks or the maintenance people going on the roof. Her little hackles go straight up and she starts growling and barking. She is just unsure of what is happening, and her little bark isn't threatening at all. If anything, the whole action makes her adorable. She thinks she is such a badass, but she's just CUTE!

Delaney is still doing very well. She isn't as active as she used to be, but she still gets the ZOOMIES here and there. The other night I was leaving the yard at 8:30 and she took off toward the front door, so once inside, I let her off leash and she went sprinting and sliding throughout the dayroom, with Devin trying to keep up with her. She hadn't run like that in a while, so she was really tired afterwards and while I was wiping her down, she just rolled over on the floor. She continues to make us all laugh!

Delaney is still doing amazing here. She continuously makes me laugh with all her little quirks, like when she is sleeping upside down next to me with her tongue hanging out or making barking sounds because she is dreaming. Or like when I come back from somewhere and she is excited, she does this yawn into a bark and then goes and attacks her bone to take out her excitement on. She just loves to get affection right away, and then once she settles down she doesn’t care about anything except TREATS.

Another awesome week with Delaney. She does really well with Devin in the yard or on the leash. He is so much faster than her, so she tries to figure out his moves but miscalculates so many times when chasing him. If she gets too close to him, he just throws whatever toy he has at her so she quits chasing him. When she catches him, she just mows over him and he loves it. With Wyatt, it’s the royal rumble every time and that’s what she LOVES. When they get done playing, they are both exhausted and she snores extra loud that night. She is an amazing character!

Delaney continues to do very well and she still makes me laugh pretty much every day. She is the most affectionate dog I’ve ever been around. When we are in the cell, she insists on being right next to me, whether she is sleeping upside down with her tongue hanging out or just laying there. We were in a lockdown all day Wednesday and all she did was sleep until six pm. She sat up and just looked at me like she was saying, “What are we still doing in here?” All I could do was laugh, and when I did her tail began wagging and she jumped on top of me, giving me kisses all over and then turned back around and went back to sleep.

Another awesome week with Delaney. She still loves being a lazy dog, but Devin knows how to push her buttons to the point where she will chase after him and play. She just absolutely plows through him and throws him all over the place, but he just continues to come back for more. She is very protective over him with certain other dogs and then she’ll turn around and go after him. Devin loves the attention from his little girlfriend, LOL.

Delaney is still as cute and awesome as ever. We were out in the front yard where Delaney was laying in the grass and the bugs began flying around her face, so we were all laughing at her trying to catch these tiny bugs in her mouth – it’s the cutest thing ever. Then she’ll roll over back and forth on her back and scratch her face with her paws like a baby, so adorable. If I tease her in the cell she does the same thing and tries to hide her face. She is amazing.

So another awesome week with Delaney. She is still just a lazy dog in the heat. Yesterday at 1:00 I woke her up to go outside to use the potty before I go on my pass, so she was still half asleep when we walked up to the fence where there was construction going on. There was a guy in a trench just standing there so we could only see half of him, a green t-shirt and a hat. She was fine until he turned and looked at her. Her hackles went up, and she began growling and barking because she didn’t know what she was looking at. So I walked her out of sight of the whole scene, but she continued her cute little growl and bark until we came back inside. She is even cuter when she growls or barks, LOL.

Delaney is still doing well and is as cute as ever. I got her a new toy, it’s like a rubber chicken but it’s a rubber piggy. When I come back into the cell, she always gets excited. Now she runs to one end of the cell and pushes on the piggy to make it squeal, then runs to the other end and goes back and forth. In such a tiny area, I’m scared she’ll hurt herself, but she never does. She is also letting out this yawn-yelp from excitement that is hilarious and so cute. She is amazing!

Delaney continues to do very well here. She gives all of us plenty of laughs. Her personality is priceless. All these 70 degree days, all she wants to do is lay in the grass, and every now and then she rolls around on her back and wiggles down the hill. Everything she does is absolutely adorable. Even when she first sees a person, when she realizes they have nothing she wants, she turns her back and goes to the far end of the leash, almost saying, “You have nothing for me; I have nothing for you.” It cracks me up every time how standoffish she can be.

Another amazing week with Delaney. She has come so far since she first arrived into my care. She has absolutely captured my heart with her cute, cuddly, and sometimes rowdy and sassy personality. The face she makes when I eat something that she doesn’t care for, which isn’t much, or don’t share with her is absolutely heartbreaking, and then she lowers her head and hugs a big SIGH to the point her lips flutter. And at that point if someone can resist giving her something to eat, I don’t think they have a heart, LOL. She thinks everyone and every dog is on her time, she thinks she is the boss. In the afternoons if the sun is out all she wants to do is lay out like a lazy teenage girl. She lays in the sun until it’s too warm and then moves to the shade. She goes back and forth until we come inside – it’s fun to watch!

So Delaney is still improving from week to week in playing with other dogs and toys. She will play for a long time with Dexter and a rope and also plays nice with Devin and a toy. It’s really cute watching her chase Devin around the yard. They are both really fast. She tries to cut Devin off by going underneath the picnic table. It’s really funny to watch. If she is being boring, Dexter and Devin will parade around her with the toy or rope until she chases after them, and then it’s game on. I still think she just enjoys being a lazy dog now, which is fine as well. She is so cute and loves to cuddle.
3/13/2026
Another fun week with Delaney. She is enjoying her play time with the new dog, Devin. I think it’s amazing how she will adjust the level of intensity that she plays at with each dog. She still loves Dexter the most. I think the reason for that is because he acts a lot like her sister used to be, with the relentless energy antagonizing her. Devin also antagonizes her, but when Delaney gets vocal, he backs off, not knowing that it’s still all play. I also think it’s funny how standoffish she is when you don’t have a treat for her. A lot of the time she goes to the end of the leash and just sits down away from everyone. And also she can give you the perfect ASPCA commercial sad look. It’s heart melting.
3/6/2026
So Delaney is still doing amazing. I believe she is slowly getting better when I leave her alone in the cell while I’m on a pass. Although when I come back, she is so excited that if she could, she would tackle me. So now at night when I come back, I hook two or three leashes together and we go in the front yard for her to run out her excitement. She just runs in huge circles so fast that she is kicking up grass doing so.
02/20/2026
Well another awesome week with Delaney, the temperature has risen outside so she is coming alive again. She enjoys running in the grass and mud. Our dog yard is all mud but her and Dexter do not care, they play and play, rolling in the mud and all. Everytime Dexter and Delaney come face to face outside Delaney gets the zoomies. She is hilarious. Delaney got the zoomies between Ruby and Dexter and Ruby's handler didn't expect her to get them also and Ruby took off causing her handler to slip in the mud and fall, it was awesome. Her personality is so cute and funny, even when she gets mad she gets cuter yet.
02/06/2026
Another amazing week with Sweet Delaney. She has really grown into her own personality with her sister gone. I think she could sleep all day in the cell if I was in there with her. She still likes to play with the other dogs especially Dexter. She likes to be chased, if Dexter catches her then she is done. Last night we let Dexter and Delaney run in the Dayroom for the first time together and man did they run. Dexter couldn't catch her on the slippery floor so Delaney just kept running laps until she was completely worn out. She laid on the floor while I wiped her down and then sprawled out on the bed until the morning. She woke up to eat her food and now she is sleeping again.
01/30/2026
Another amazing week with Delaney. We got a big snow storm and she hates it. I took her in the yard in about 4 inches of snow and she looked like she was broken. So after the storm I shoveled a path around the perimeter of the yard and she wouldn't stray from it, she just ran laps for about 10 minutes and then her paws got cold. She also finally warmed up to the new dog Dexter so now she plays with him for longer periods of time than any of the other dogs. I don't know if she relates him to her sister or not but the play is more like she played with her sister. Dexter lets her be more dominant and they both love to play until we stop them because they get to crazy and sweaty.
01/23/2026
Since her sister left, Delaney is learning she can be a "lazy dog" in the cell, often just laying down to sleep. However, she still has high energy in the dayroom. She hates the cold and doesn't care to play outside. She is still adjusting to the new dog, Dexter; she will play if he submits, but snaps at him if he gets too playful. Despite this, she is doing amazing and loves to snuggle.
01/16/2026
Since her sister left, Delaney has had high energy because they used to play so hard together. To help, her handler focused on mental stimulation; in just one day, she learned how to back up, bow, and spin. The handler also kept her active during the day to prevent sleeping, which tired her out so much it took two days to recuperate. She is now back to her energetic self, and more training is planned.
01/09/2026
So another amazing week with Delaney—she is extremely smart. We went for a walk to R-block and building #15 with the counselor and unit manager, so now she believes that whenever the women show up, we are going for a walk and she can go explore. I was in the yard with her playing around and I guess she was done because I had the leash hanging on the fence next to the gate, so she ran over and grabbed the end and looked at me. Her expressions are priceless. She has a really funny and cute personality.
01/02/2026
So I was walking Delaney outside next to the flower beds when a vole took off and Delaney lost her mind. Now every time we go out to that spot, she has to check to make sure there is nothing there. Another day I was lying in my bed and she jumped up on me and then realized for the first time that there is a window there, so then every time someone walked by she would do a low growl/bark. It had me laughing so hard which would make her look at me all weird, which made me laugh even harder. She is nonstop entertainment.

When it's cold outside, Delaney plays for a little bit but doesn't last long before she wants to come inside. She runs to the gate, sits down and looks at me, then she runs to me and then right back to the gate. I got permission to let her run inside once everyone is locked in and she runs like a wild child, doing big laps around the dayroom for about ten minutes with her sister chasing her, and then she is done for the night. She gets so worn out from this that she sleeps on the floor where it's cool for about an hour before she gets in the bed. She is adapting very well.
12/19/2025
My second week with Delaney was amazing. She is beginning to come out of her shell a little more. She loves to snuggle but also knows when it's time to go to her own bed, though she does it with a cute sad face that makes it hard to say no to anything. She is extremely smart and learns very fast, even though she likes to be stubborn at times. She is playing very well with Charlie and the rope; they play tug a lot in the yard and run back and forth while both holding the rope. She is making good progress with the resource guarding.

Delaney’s first week in the program was described as amazing, and she already has her handler wrapped around her paw. She is noted as the sweetest dog the handler has ever been around and has the endearing habit of sleeping upside down and snoring loudly. During this week, she successfully learned how to "down" and give "paw" on both sides. She is highly food-motivated, described as a "bottomless pit," and her handler is currently working on slowing her down while she eats to prevent her from choking. Delaney is very submissive, gets along well with other dogs, and loves to play, though she tends to get bored of playing tug-of-war rather quickly.

Delaney joined HOPE today and we're all looking forward to learning more about her!
